What Is Humanism ?
Humanism is a system of belief and behavior which developed in the West from the philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome, the modern Renaissance and Enlightenment, the scientific and political revolutions, and the growth of liberty, equality and fraternity. Its theory is based on the assumption that this life and this world are all we know and on the assertion that the most important factor in all our thought and action is our common humanity. Its increasing popularity is a result of the general secularisation of society.
What Do Humanists Do ?
To sum up what humanists do, it is to seek to promote and protect the humanist lifestance, never forgetting the rights of others to believe and practice whatever religion they wish.
Of course there is the more active side of Humanism. There are the more controversial areas in ethics and the law. We can provide services for non-religious weddings, funerals and namings. But there is a lot more that concerns Humanists.
All of this work is being done, and unlike other groups we get no special air time on the T.V., nor any special support from your taxes. More than one third of the nations population do not believe in gods, yet we are continually frustrated in our attempts to have this reality properly recognised.
If the symbol of Humanism had as much meaning as that say of the Crescent of Islam or the Cross of Christianity, then we might be half way there.
Humanist believe that this life is all we have and that we should strive to make it worthwhile, for ourselves, for others and for future generations. Humanists make no claim to final answers, since we regard the search for understanding as a continuous process. But we believe we have to face life’s problems through our own moral and intellectual resources.
Who Are The Harrow Humanists ?
- The Harrow Humanist Society meets regularly to discuss these and similar issues. Meetings are usually held at the H.A.V.S. Lodge, 64 Pinner Road at 8 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, from September to June. We invite speakers on a wide range of topics (see library noticeboards) and all are welcome to join in the discussion. Light refreshments are available. Other activities are occasionally arranged during the year. We aim to provide a friendly meeting-ground for like-minded people.
- The Harrow Humanist Society is affiliated to the British Humanist Association, Harrow Council for Racial Equality and the Workers Education Association. It supports Harrow Green Agenda and the work of environmental groups, such as Harrow Friends of the Earth. It takes part in an annual collection day for the United Nations Association and U.N.I.C.E.F. (Harrow and Pinner Branch).
